Costanilla: Come together as One By Sam Costanilla Spotlight
THERE is really a need for Cebu’s literary writers and groups to come together and form a united front if they want to succeed in uplifting Cebuano literature. This very valid point was stressed by a good friend of mine, Police Supt. Alex Ababon Abadinas a.k.a. AAA who is presently head of the community relations section of the police regional office. We bumped into each other during a recent meeting we both attended at the Capitol. AAA is a noted literary figure here; his forte is the spoken Cebuano poetry.

ACTUALLY we share the same view. I fully agree with AAA that there is really a need for local literary clubs to group as one. As it is now, Cebu has at least four of such organizations, namely: Ludabi, Bathalad, Dagang Foundation and Puting Dagang. I used to belong to the first one, but when the other three sprouted like mushrooms, I voluntarily resigned from the club. Maybe that was a wrong move on my part, but I felt thatwas the best “protest action” I could take. Yes, personally, I am strongly against the mushrooming of literary clubs. AAA has the same sentiment, he told me.

WHAT is funny here is the fact that some of the literary authorities here are affiliated with almost all of the four existing clubs. I know of another literary writer who is a member of both Ludabi and Bathalad. When I jokingly asked him where his loyaltybelongs, he simply answered that it depends which group offers “nicer perks,” whatever that means. I didn’t bother ask him to elaborate.

YOURS truly and AAA are one in emphasizing that it is a long overdue action on the part of the rest of Cebu’s literary figures to come together, unite and stand as one cohesive force. We are, therefore, appealing to our fellow literary writers to forgetabout competition as far as our groups are concerned. Let us do away with factionalism. Let us compete as individual writers and speakers, not as splintered groups. After all, we have one and the same objective, one direction, one cause.

SOUTHWINGS band has acquired new members from Compostela. Val Dinopol e-mailed that his band’s new players are drummer Jaymer Punay, keyboardist LudwigMoises Agan and bassist Alan Amante. The three of them were the back-up musicians of Rolly Wagas who is now based in Pennslyvania where he continues to performbefore jampacked audiences. With the presence of the three new musicians, Dinopol is relegated to playing the acoustic guitar and singing. Another member, Paul D, is still the lead guitarist. Dinopol also wrote that Southwings, a country-rock band, is now open toinvitations and engagements. Those wishing to invite the band may e-mail southwingsband@yahoo.com.

ALL is set for the Yukbo concert featuring homegrown talents on September 30 at the Mandaue city cultural and sports complex. Musical director Doy Montańa and marketing lady Tita Domingo confirmed this to me. I am personally endorsing this show to the general public if only for its noble purpose, to give our very own local performers a chance to shine onstage. The project is the first venture of the Cebu MalaySociety of Composers, Artists and Producers and its proceeds will go to the coffers of the Cebu Association of legitimate Musical Artists. If we Cebuanos love to watch foreign acts, there is no reason why we don’t have the same love for our local stars.

TWO radiomen are now facing the greatest battle of their lives--a million-peso libel suit filed against them by a public official who felt aggrieved after they fiercely attacked him in their program. The two guys are telling friends they themselves feel they are losing the case.
