Cop shot by man he asked to attend hearing

A POLICEMAN is now confined in a hospital after a man he tried to summon to a barangay hearing allegedly shot him Saturday night.

PO3 Clint Cañete, who is assigned at the Regional Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Force (Raidsotf), was at home when Dennis Pogoy, a tanod of Barangay Alegria, Cordova, sought his help.

Pogoy was asked to serve a summons to Alberto Palangan, who works as a caretaker for a newly constructed building.

Pogoy told Cañete that when he met Palangan, the latter pulled out a firearm and pointed this at him, which prompted him to back off.

Assistance sought

Since Cañete lived in the area, barangay officials decided to seek his assistance.

Cañete and Pogoy then decided to proceed to the construction site where Palangan works.

The two went to the area onboard Cañete’s motorcycle, but Palangan was not around.

When they returned to Cañete’s house, they saw Palangan riding a trisikad.

Cañete stopped the trisikad and introduced himself as a police officer.

Palangan reportedly pulled out a gun and fired at Cañete and Pogoy several times.

Cañete was wounded in the abdomen while his motorcycle was also slightly damaged.

This did not stop him and Pogoy from grappling with Palangan for the weapon and shooting him in the leg to weaken him.

Pogoy recovered Palangan’s gun and the two brought him to the Cordova Police Station where charges are being prepared against him.

Police also brought Cañete and Pogoy to a hospital after they suffered cuts and bruises as a result of the scuffle for Palangan’s firearm.

Cañete is now confined at the Visayas Community Medical Center in Cebu City.

Deputy Regional Director for Administration Ronald Roderos commended Cañete for his bravery. (MEA)
