Domingo keeps bantam crown by split decision

MICHAEL Domingo eked out a split-decision win over No.1 challenger Johnny Lear to keep his Philippine bantamweight division title at the Metropolis Mall in Alabang, Muntinlupa in Saturday evening’s “Tugon sa Hamon, Box to the Max.”

Judges Epi Almeda scored the bout 115-112 for Domingo, Salvador Lopez tallied it 117-11 for Domingo, while Henry Verniz scored it 114-113 for Lear after a very strategic 12 rounds of action.

Aggression

Domingo’s aggressiveness throughout the fight gave him the victory. Coming off a seventh-round TKO win over Mexican Felix Alejandro Montiel last July 2 at the Araneta Coliseum, Domingo applied the pressure on Lear in the opening round.

Lear, who once trained at the ALA Gym, retaliated in the second round by using jabs and straights.

Action heated up in the fifth when Domingo was cut above the left eye after an accidental headbutt.

Domingo seemed to walk into a trap after the resumption of action when Lear scored a big uppercut that wobbled the ALA Gym fighter before the bell.

Despite the cut, Domingo continued to stalk Lear, who was forced to backtrack from the sixth until the ninth rounds.

Lear forced a swelling underneath Domingo’s right eye in the 10th round. But Lear failed to dominated the next two rounds as Domingo won his title defense for the third time.

WBF challenge

The win improved Domingo to 29-13-3 with 11 KOs. He will get a crack at the WBF title in France next month.

In the undercard, ALA Boy Rocky Fuentes scored a knockout in the 51 seconds of the first round over Ricky Manatad, Fabio Marfa pulled a one-sided unanimous decision win over Alfred Nagal after 10 rounds,

Former RP flyweight-champion Federico Catubay scored a unanimous-decision win over Flash Simbajon, Louie Bantigue won a unanimous decision win over Jong Jong Gagante and Daniel Diolan beat Cris Dujali also by unanimous decision.

Hawaii-based Van Oscar Penovaroff scored two knockdowns in the third round en route to scoring a unanimous-decision win over Beboy Cudeldiego. (RCM)
