MVBA to hold coaches seminar

After the staging of the ML Kwarta Padala First Conference earlier this year, the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association gets set to launch a follow-up with the Second Conference in September.

Meanwhile, a very busy off-season awaits the MVBA and its teams. As part of preparations, the MVBA will hold a coaching seminar on July 21-23 at the University of San Carlos.

The seminar, exclusive to MVBA head coaches and assistant coaches, will feature a battery of current and former PBA and national team coaches as lecturers, led by coaches Alfrancis Chua, Eric Altamirano and Ed Cordero.

“We are doing this seminar in order to raise the level of coaching in the MVBA by bringing the top Filipino coaches to Cebu to share their knowledge,” said MVBA founder Raul Alcoseba, also a Cebu City councilor. “I’m sure our coaches will learn a lot during this three-day seminar.”

Meanwhile, the league will also conduct the MVBA Invitational Tournament on Aug. 21-26 at the Cebu Coliseum featuring MVBA squads against Metro Manila teams.

MVBA teams led by M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu, the First Conference champion, and runner-up PacMan-GenSan, will take on the TeleTech Titans of the Philippine Basketball League and possibly another PBL team.

Titans head coach Jerry Codiñera confirmed their participation with MVBA Mindanao Commissioner Willy Generalao. Codiñera and Generalao were Philippine Basketball Association teammates with the Purefoods Hotdogs in the team’s maiden PBA year in 1988.

Also to play for the MVBA are Montaña Pawnshop-Davao and Cebu Landmaster-Toledo.

The MVBA its teams have also received invitations to play in separate one-week tournaments in line with the foundation days of the cities of Davao and Digos in the second and third weeks of August.
