Corporate teams, Smart build homes for So. Leyte

Twenty-six corporate and non-corporate teams participated last month in the Gawad Kalinga Isang Milyong Bayani, a race to build houses for landslide survivors in Southern Leyte.

One of the teams that participated was composed of Smart Communications Inc. employees who were not only up to the physical challenge but were also committed to help disaster victims in Guinsaugon, Southern Leyte.

The activity was initiated by Gawad Kalinga to provide permanent housing to landslide victims who have lived in evacuation centers since the tragedy in February.

Although the Petron team emerged the overall event winner, Smart builders found fulfillment in having helped put up a home for the landslide victims.

Each team had to build a whole house—from the structure’s foundation, to septic tank. The teams did everything from carrying hollow blocks to installing the roof, among other chores. (PR)
