Barakos survive, cut Purefoods series lead to 3-2

Red Bull will live to fight another day after the Barakos postponed the impeding celebration by the Purefoods Chunkee Giants with a heart-stopping 98-93 Game 5 victory yesterday at the Araneta Coliseum.

The victory not only prevented Purefoods from claiming the championship diadem, but more importantly, it slashed the Giants’ series lead to 3-2.

But the win didn’t come easily for the Barakos as they had to crawl back from a 15-point deficit in the third quarter before securing the victory.

Down, 48-53, in the middle of the third canto, the Barakos fought like wounded lions in the ensuing minutes as they trimmed Purefoods’ lead to 72-66 going into the final quarter.

Afloat

The Giants, with Mark Pingris, James Yap and Jun Limpot at the scoring end, managed to stay afloat in the opening minutes of the fourth period as they stayed ahead but Red Bull, with Mick Pennissi and Enrico Villanueva spearheading the charge, dropped a game-breaking 20-9 blitzkrieg that saw the Barakos leading the Giants, 96-90, with 33.9 seconds to go.

Noy Castillo sank a trey in the return play, giving Purefoods a slim chance to salvage the win but Villanueva broke free and went to the free-throw line on a foul by Yap.

After Villanueva secured both shots, the Giants committed another error, dousing any hopes of making a miracle comeback.

Villanueva led all Red Bull scorers with 21 points, while taking down seven boards. Mick Pennissi contributed 17 markers for the Barakos.

But the biggest revelation for the Barakos was rookie Larry Fonacier, who banged in 15 baskets, including seven crucial points in the dying seconds, while grabbing eight rebounds.

Purefoods was led by James Yap with 28 points. Mark Pingris added 12, Richard Yee 17, while the pair of Jun Limpot and Kerby Raymundo chipped in 10 points apiece. (JSV)
