Chiongbian: Open this
By Edgar R. Chiongbian

The British are coming, the British Open is coming, the Open is coming, err...or not quite, it’s the Open Championship that is coming!

That’s what they call it now. No word of British or golf as part of the sentence.

Will they try to do this in the United States? Cris Aquino enunciates, “Deal or no deal.” Hey, who wants to drop the word US when they all love to sing the song that says, “We are proud Americans… land of the free!”

Anyway, this will be somewhat confusing later because of tennis or other sports played in England. My guess is they dropped British in the title because the tournament rotates to other parts of the United Kingdom, and maybe not all of them are British, right? What’s your guess? So why not call it the UK Open? Maybe too close to the other one!

ESPN. Well and in fact, the Open Championship is already here and will air at 4 p.m. today on ESPN. Thanks for the info Rene Sarmiento. We know that Tiger Woods is ready to play because of his excellent warm-up rounds in the Western Open that gave him a second-place win. Phil Mickelson is another story; he’s still trying to get rid of the ghost from the US Open.
And we saw him drop out of contention in a jiffy at the Western Open. But don’t count him out because that’s how he likes to win, coming from nowhere.

However, with the bump and run on British courses, I think he will have his hands full even with his lob wedges.

The CCC ladies chapter had a Fil-Am Friendship golf tournament last July 12 and the Red team won against the Blue team. I guess it was a battle of the Red coats and the Blue coats, otherwise known as the colonial war. These gals really went a long way to find some friends (joke only girls). We’re not telling anyone how young we are! Chapter president Mila Chan led the Red team, with team members Aki Oka, Vicky Moraza, Flor Streegan, Julpha Chiongbian, Tina Ebrada, Lydia Medalle and Jo Veloso.

I forgot to mention Danny Flores last Sunday as the chapter president of the Federation of Senior golfers at Mactan Golf. He did a solo act in coming up a very successful tournament with loads of prizes at a fraction of a cost for registration. And another that I failed to mention was that the super-huge practice green at Mactan balances off their small greens in the course. So I guess that makes it evens-Stevens.

This Saturday is our turnover ceremonies at the Marriott Hotel for the Rotary Club of Cebu. All good things must come to an end for me as the outgoing president. Incoming president Oscar Jun Jereza Jr. will be taking over so everything is fine and dandy. Our new District governor Jun Almeda Jr. will be inducting the new officers; so double Jun congratulations to you two. Making it more lively will be the attendance of our sister clubs from RC Rizal West and RC Bagumbayan Manila.

Speaking of congratulations, my favorite Rotarian, favorite golfer, favorite friend is getting married this weekend. He will be another one amongst us who say and sing, “Love is lovelier, the second time around.” Not to put a load on my good old buddy and happy guy, but let me just say, “ Hey, Joe, don’t hold any punches and go break a leg.” Or is that for boxing and dancing. What do I know; I’ve been married a long time! So, JS keep in good shape and come back in one piece from your long European honeymoon!

GOLF TIP: Plumb-bobbing is a common way to find the high side or low side of the hole. Before you try it, you must first check if your putter hangs perfectly vertical by lining it up to the corner of a locker or wall.

To plumb bob, hang your putter like a plumb directly in front of your dominant eye while standing or squatting behind the ball looking towards a line towards the hole. The high side or the low side will become apparent. This is your “allowance” or the line that will trace the ball to the hole.

Take into consideration that the blade of the grass affects the way the ball will break. Putting “against or cross blade” will make the ball break more and “with the blade,” the ball will break less. When uncertain about how the break will go, a good rule is to trust your instincts and stay with the line you have chosen using the plumb-bob method.
