Fide bent on 2012 Olympics bid
The Federation Internationale Des Echecs (Fide) won’t give up on its bid to include the sport in the Olympics; the inclusion of chess in the 2006 Asian Games in Qatar is a leap to that direction.
Fide, the international body of chess in the International Olympics Committee, bid for the inclusion of the sport in the 2000 Sydney Olympics but failed.
In Sydney, Fide also showcased a two-game exhibition match between 2000 world knockout champion Viswanathan Anand and world-contender Alexei Shirov, which ended in a fighting draw.
Asian Games
Chess is included in the 2006 Asian Games in Qatar through some initiatives of the Asian member-countries of Fide.
However, Fide Honorary Chairman Florencio Campomanes during a surprise visit at the Bibo Chess Club Monday night, said that Fide president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has never given up on their Olympic bid.
“The Asian Games is one big start, but Fide is dreaming big in its campaign for the inclusion of the sport to the Olympics this 2012,” the 78-year-old Campomanes told Sun.Star Cebu.
He said Fide is wooing London, where the 2012 Olympics will be held, to include the sport.
“Kirsan is actually doing his best, but there are some things that he has to deal with,” said Campomanes. (JAF)
