30 working street kids get scholarship grants
Thirty working children in Lapu-Lapu City will soon have a chance to finish school.
The Aboitiz Group Foundation Inc. (AGFI) recently distributed scholarship packages to 30 children in Lapu-Lapu City as part of the foundation’s Street Urban Working Children (SUWC) program.
AGFI will shoulder their tuition, school supplies and uniform allowance.
The SUWC project, which is now on its third year, is a joint project of the Department of Social Welfare and Development Lapu-Lapu City.
Children who work in the city’s streets are given the opportunity to finish their high school education.
Most of the beneficiaries come from Barangay Basak and Barangay Pajo and are enrolled in the Marigondon National High School, Pajo National High School and Basak Night High School.
Employment
The program began with 100 scholars and most of the beneficiaries are now employed in firms at the Mactan Export Processing Zone.
Others have pursued vocational scholarships at the Center for Industrial and Technological Education.
Before becoming SUWC scholars, the children sold newspapers, candies, cigarettes and rags in the streets of Lapu-Lapu City to help their parents earn a living.
