Fastcraft hits banca of Badjaos; mother killed, child injured
A Badjao mother died while her two-year-old boy was seriously injured when a fast ferry accidentally hit them off Shell Island, Cebu City early Wednesday morning.
The Cebu Coast Guard (CG) said Menia Aslani, of Mambaling, Cebu City, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC).
Luckily, her two-year-old son Henry survived the mishap and was already declared in stable condition.
Petty Officer 2 Francisco Mandal told Sun.Star Cebu that mv Kinswell 2, a fast ferry of Kinswell Shipping Lines plying Cebu City-Tubigon-Bohol route, was on sea trial when the mishap occurred around 5:45 a.m.
Mandal could not say whether the ferry rammed through the wooden boat of the victims, causing it to keel over, or the victims were partly hit by the speeding vessel while they were on seawater.
Impact
Investigators theorized that Aslani had passed out from the strong impact. The Badjaos are known as sea gypsies because of their survival skills at sea.
The presence of Badjaos has been a common sight in the Mactan channel as they are used to diving for coins tossed by ship passengers upon arrival.
Mandal believes that fellow Badjaos rushed the mother and son to the CCMC. He could not confirm, though, if the Kinswell management has extended financial assistance to the victims. (GC)
