PF goes for title, RB for equalizer

GAME TODAY
(Araneta Coliseum)
7:10 p.m. – Purefoods v. Red Bull

Series Summary
Purefoods v. Red Bull
Game 1 – Purefoods 101, Red Bull 97 Game 2 – Purefoods 93, Red Bull 82
Game 3 – Purefoods 79, Red Bull 89 Game 4 – Purefoods 99, Red Bull 81
Game 5 – Purefoods 93, Red Bull 98

Purefoods will try to take another crack at the championship title today when the Chunkee Giants clash with the Red Bull Barakos in Game 6 at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Giants’ supposed victory celebration last Wednesday turned into disaster after the Giants succumbed to a 93-98 loss, cutting their series lead to 3-2.

Red Bull’s victory gave the team renewed hope in their quest for a championship double.

“I’m not taking any credit for this victory. The players made it happen. And they did it with sheer courage and character,” said Barakos coach Guiao, who is seeking his first all-Filipino title.

He also said that coming into the game, their focus was to simply try to spoil Purefoods’ party and extend the series to another game.

“As I’ve said, nothing is impossible. Now they’re just one up on us. I feel we have a good chance to turn the series around if we could play as hard as we did in the second half in Game 6,” Guiao said.

But Giants coach Ryan Gregorio could take comfort in the fact that Red Bull still needs to beat them a couple of times for the title while they, on the other hand, need just to secure a win and it will be goodbye for the Barakos.

League MVP James Yap, surprise package Richard Yee, Most Improved Player awardee Mark Pingris, rejuvenated veteran Jun Limpot and main-man Kerby Raymundo will once again lead the campaign of the Giants today, while Noy Castillo, Roger Yap, Paul Artadi, Peter June Simon and Rey Evangelista will provide bench depth. Red Bull, on the other hand, will rely on Enrico Villanueva, Mick Pennisi, Lordy Tugade, Topex Robinson and Bogo, Cebu-native Junthy Valenzuela when they try to extend the series to the fullest.

Rookies Larry Fonacier, Paolo Bugia and Leo Najorda alongside Cyrus Baguio will supply additional firepower. (JSV)
