Ouano requires City workers to watch President's Sona

THE Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex is likely to be packed on Monday afternoon as President Arroyo's State of the Nation Address (Sona) will be broadcast live to local government executives, regional directors and private sector representatives.

This will be the second time for Arroyo's national address to be shown on a big screen at the sports complex.

Mayor Thadeo Ouano has ordered all local officials and government workers to be at the sports complex.

At least 3,000 people are expected to show up.

An advisory from the Philippine Information Agency 7 said that Cebu was picked as one of the "remote points" for the event.

For his part, Ouano urged through a memorandum that city councilors, barangay captains, barangay councilors, Sangguniang Kabataan officials, consultants, department and office heads of local and national offices and their staff attend the event.

"Through this, we will be updated with what our national leadership is doing for the progress of the nation," said Ouano, adding that attendance of everyone is a must.

Welcome address

The mayor is will give the welcome address while Cebu Vice Gov. Gregorio Sanchez Jr. will deliver the key message.

Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia will be in Congress for Arroyo's speech.

In 2003, Arroyo's Sona was also aired live at the sports complex before an estimated crowd of 12,000 that included Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama and then governor Pablo Garcia.

The President's 48-minute speech noted her achievements and drew applause when she said that the death penalty would be imposed on those convicted of drug-related cases.

However, Arroyo abolished the death penalty last month prior to her trip to the Vatican.

It drew a lot of flak from anti-crime groups and families of victims of heinous crimes. (AAG)
