Costanilla: What’s in a NAME? By Sam Costanilla Spotlight
COMPOSER-singer Mel Libre, who also writes for Sun.Star Cebu, has e-mailed from New Zealand where he and his family are now based. He wrote that while he commends Yukbo concert organizer-composer Doy Montaña’s pursuit in showcasing Cebuano talents, he is somewhat saddened by the use of Yukbo as the title of the Sept. 30 concert at the Mandaue city cultural and sports complex. What’s in a name? According toMel, for one who nurtured Yukbo: Ang Konsiyerto for almost 20 years, it means a lot. The annual concert began in 1986 just weeks after the Edsa People Power.

MEL also wrote that while Yukbo: Ang Konsiyerto wasn’t mounted this year, it doesn’t mean it has closed its doors for the future. He is presently working on a new concept, new image and new vision for the annual project. Finally, Mel is requesting Doy to use adifferent title for the Sept. 30 show while he is also praying for its success.

RIGHT after receiving Mel’s e-mail, I immediately contacted Doy for his comment or reaction. The guy was open to Mel’s concern, but suggested that he meet first with the other show organizers to discuss the matter among them. I suggested that instead of Yukbo, they can use Pasidungog as an alternative title.

MY good friend RD Alba of Bohol and Hollywood has e-mailed that he is busy working as producer-actor Cesar Montano’s assistant director. Both men are working on a comedy film titled Reunion. RD is also the movie’s director of photography and editor. Quite a job. He wrote that Reunion stars Cesar, Bayani Agbayani, Desiree del Valle, Giselle Sanchez, Gene Padilla and Rommel Montano.

RD also stated that the Reunion story is about Eric (Cesar) who is a tourist guide in Bohol. His friends visit him to talk about their high school reunion. In the film, Rommel and Gene are Brokeback Mountain-style lovers. RD also stressed that Sunshine Cruz,Cesar’s wife, is the casting director and that the movie will be released in September or October. * * *
IN fairness to the members of the legislative body of a southern Cebu town, as well as the officers of the parish pastoral council, let me clarify that the source of a recent blind item in this corner was a letter written by a “concerned municipal employee.” He wrote that there was a brewing conflict between the local government unit and the parish leadership over a recent concert organized by the pastoral council. The truth of the matter is, a municipal councilor didn’t order the collection of any amusement tax from the proceeds of the concert featuring comedian-singer Budoy.
