2 Cebuanos lead chess tilt
Cebu's Carlos "Pipo" Moreno III and Mandaue City's Eden Diano snared the top spots after round six of the 1st Tanjay Chess Open Tournament at Tanjay City, Negros Oriental.
Veteran Moreno defeated fellow Cebuano Anthony Makinano in 60 moves of the Queen's Gambit Declined.
Moreno saw a solid and time-consuming move in the near endgame that made Makinano panic in time.
"He was really in panic. Moreno saw a time-consuming (move) in a positional battle," said Cepca champion Jun Olis, who led the Cebu delegation in Tanjay.
With the black pieces, Diano, who defeated National Master Nouri Hamed of Bacolod City in the fourth round via time-forfeiture, downed Erwin Ababat of Cebu in 22 moves of the Sicilian Kan.
Diano, known for his highly combinative style, created tremendous attacks and capitalized on Ababat's passive pieces in the middle game.
Ababat then surrendered at once after he lost a piece in the early middlegame.
Moreno and Diano scored 5.5 points each.
Hamed and cebuano Voltaire Sevillano shared third and fourth places with 5 points each.
Fide Master Elmer Sumngat of Bohol, who absorbed an upset loss in the early round, and Richard of Lahug Cebu City tied for 5th and sixth place with 4.5 points each. (JAF)
