DOT targets 3M tourists

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said that after tourist arrivals exceeded a million before the first half of the year, they are targeting three million tourists by the end of the year.

“For the first five months, (tourist arrivals) grew to 11.5 percent, which is close to 1.5 million tourists. A great number of them are Koreans,” Durano said.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 reported that for the first four months of this year, Korean visitors increased by 35 percent to 49,852 compared with last year’s 36,924.

Koreans still top the region’s travel market, making up 33.25 percent of the total visitor arrivals from January to April.

Growth

They are followed by the Japanese at 26.76 percent and US tourists 11.62 percent.

A total of 40,157 Japanese and 17,422 Americans visited Cebu during the first four months of this year.

The figures grew from the 38,004 Japanese and 13,912 Americans tourists recorded last year.

But due to the limited capacity in accommodation, Durano said that the government is targeting the corporate market for tourists.

Durano revealed to reporters that a big batch of tourists from China will be vacationing in key tourist destinations like Manila, Cebu and Boracay for approximately ten days next month.

“These are employees from Amway. There will be about 2,000 of them in batches of four. This will be an incentive travel,” Durano said in an interview. (MMM)
