US national, Pinay fiancée both shot in the head
A former American soldier and his Filipina fiancée were shot just as they got off a taxicab on R. Duterte St., Banawa, Cebu City yesterday afternoon.
Victor Eugene Noe, 68, was killed on the spot while Catalina Cabanes, 35, is unconscious as of press time and is confined at the Chong Hua Hospital.
Cabanes’ daughters, aged 11 and eight, were with them when two men on a motorcycle approached and fired at the couple past 2 p.m.
Both suffered gunshot wounds in the head.
Cabanes’ 11-year-old daughter said that they went to the Department of Foreign Affairs and then to Jollibee in Banawa before proceeding to South Pointe Manor.
She did not know what Noe and Cabanes were going to do there, but police learned that they were going to see a realtor.
As they got off the taxicab, two men on a motorcycle fired several shots at the couple.
4 shells
Four empty shells were recovered. The shots also bore two holes on the subdivision gate.
The gunman had left behind a blue cloth mask, which he had used to cover his face.
The mask was found on the ground less than two meters away from Noe’s body.
His companion, the motorcycle driver, had a helmet on.
Bystanders claimed that the Honda Web motorcycle proceeded to Labangon.
SPO2 Alex Dacua believes the attackers followed them from the fast food chain to the subdivision gate.
The two daughters had come from Pagadian City yesterday morning and they were working out their passports so they could go with their mother and Noe to the United States next year.
The two are reportedly planning to get married soon.
The eldest daughter lives with Cabanes’ mother while the younger one lives with her father.
Noe and Cabanes reportedly met in the US when Cabanes found a job there.
Police are also hoping to locate a witness who first reported the incident to the Punta Princesa Police Station.
“Good man”
The witness came in a blue truck and told police about the shooting before speeding off.
Cabanes’ daughters, who talked to reporters, later said they did not know who would possibly be angry at Noe and their mother.
Noe’s neighbors at the San Agustin Heights in Barangay Tisa were surprised to learn about the killing, saying he was a good man.
As of press time, police were still trying to locate persons close to the couple for more leads on the motive. (MEA)
