Speak out: Can’t we enjoy live Manny Pacquiao bouts?

Together with millions of Filipinos and Mr. Sunny Hermano, who has voiced his concern “Can`t they show Pacquiao fight live on Television?” (PDI, July 20, 2006, page A12), I am not pleased with the delayed telecast of the Pacquiao-Larios fight last June 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. taking five hours instead of two hours. Can’t Filipinos watch and enjoy direct and live telecast of the actual fight and cheer for their hero, in their own homes, on their own television sets, without commercials interfering the suspense and spoiling their enjoyment of the sport? There is no need to put large TV screens on plazas, in malls or in other public places. In other countries, such event is telecast without interruption; commercials are only shown before and after the said event and during replay showing!

In the forthcoming Pacquiao-Morales rubber match set for Nov. 18, 2006 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, the Filipino people will greatly appreciate it if TV channels telecast the actual fight, round by round, direct and live, without interruption. Commercials will be greatly appreciated if they are shown only before and after the event and during replay showing, and the audience will be more disposed to patronize the advertised products, and that is what advertisers actually would wish.

In this way, advertisers become audience friendly. Advertising cost may be reduced but more advertisers may be accepted. If in other countries they can do that, we can do likewise in the Philippines, for the sake of public service. The whole nation is watching such event and other events of national importance.
