Cebu at risk of missing out on FIFA Goal project?
GOOD news and bad news for Cebu football.
Cebu is being considered as one of five recipients of the FIFA Goal project, but the Cebu Football Association may have already risked its chances, after only two CebuFA officials met with FIFA inspectors last Sunday.
FIFA inspectors Jeysing Muthiat, of the FIFA Development Office in Kuala Lumpur, Masen Gilani and Nicholas Lau, have been going around the country to inspect local Football Associations. They dropped by Cebu last Sunday to assess the state of local football.
Accompanying them were Vince Santos, the Philippine Football Federation vice president, and Bob Salvacion a technical staff member of the PFF.
The officials are assessing the first five recipients of the FIFA Goal project and six other FAs, which would be the new recipients once the PFF's proposal to expand the project is approved by FIFA.
Accurate picture
The five officials met with CebuFA president Jonathan Maximo and Jackie Lotzoff.
Despite meeting with only two officals, Muthiat called it "a solid three-hour meeting."
"It would have been good to see all the other stakeholders (of Cebu football) to get an accurate picture of each association. In our previous meetings (with other FAs) almost 80 percent of the board was present," said Santos.
Santos is hoping that Cebu gets to be one of the recipients of the project.
"Things are moving here in Cebu compared to the other FAs. There are a lot of competitions and it is not dependent on the PFF for funds. It's ideal that Cebu receives something because of its central location, the quality and number of universities and its economic aspect. Cebu is also one of the most active in participating in national tournaments," said Santos.
Notice
Asked if the non-appearance of the other board members will swing against CebuFA Santos simply said, "When was the last time FIFA was here in Cebu?"
For his part, Maximo said they were able to present the activities reports and the competition since they took office in 2003.
He added that they were informed of the visit only last week.
Santos said the PFF sent its second notice to CebuFA last July 13 and 14, a memo on the topics to be covered on July 17 and the actual questionnaire on July 19. (ML)
