Diano rules Tanjay City Chess tilt
Mandaue City’s Eden Diano ruled the 1st Tanjay City Open Chess Tournament last Sunday at Tanjay City, Negros Oriental.
Known as an on-and-off seasoned player, Diano, wielding again the black pieces, defeated fellow Cebuano Voltaire Sevillano in 47 moves of a tight positional struggle in the English Opening to bring home the P10,000 top prize.
Diano, a tactical player, played active preventive measures in the middle game play and outlasted Sevillano in the endgame squabble.
In round six, Diano defeated Erwin Ababat, another Cebuano, in 22 moves of the Sicilian Kan.
Ample time
He also defeated National Master Nouri Hamed of Bacolod City, a conqueror of Asia’s First Grandmaster Eugenio Torre, in round four via default – giving him ample time to scout other players’ style and to relax before the fifth round.
Another Cebuano, Carlos “Pipo” Moreno III, who shared the lead with Diano in Round six, took second spot after accepting a truce with Hamed in 65 moves of the Queen’s Pawn Opening in the final round of the seven-round Swiss System Format Tournament.
Positional player
Moreno earned P5,000.
Richard Natividad, a Petrosian-like positional player, scalped Fide Master Elmer Sumngat in the last round to join Hamed for third and fourth places with 5.5 points each.
However, Hamed took outright third after the tie-break, while Natividad settled for fourth. Still, they will share the third and fourth cash prizes with P3,000 and P2,000, respectively.
Sevillano and Makinano tied for fifth to ninth places with five points apiece, with Sevillano getting the fifth spot on tibreak for the P1,000 prize. (JAF)
