CH to spend P4.2M to repair Cebu City condo for Asean

Structural defects of the Cebu City Government’s condominium will finally be repaired after the City Council approved an appropriation of P4.2 million for its renovation.

The five-story condominium along N. Bacalso Ave. will house policemen coming from other provinces who will help secure the Asean summit.

A major overhaul of the plumbing system and electrical connections in the condominium will eat up the bulk of the renovation cost.

In yesterday’s regular session, the council approved a resolution appropriating P4.2 million for the renovation.

Masonry, carpentry

It will also cover concrete and masonry works, carpentry works, doors and windows, painting and hardware expenses.

The councilors approved the renovation of the condominium after the City was placed under a state of disaster preparedness in time for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit in December.

“It is essential for Cebu City to prepare and carry out disaster preparedness and contingency measures, as well
as the appropriation of funds, in preparation for the upcoming Asean summit,” read the resolution.
Mayor’s headache

The condominium has 85 units. It has long been a headache for Mayor Tomas Osmeña after occupants failed to pay their rental dues.

All 118 occupants were evicted early this year after the City Attorney’s Office reported that they are not qualified to occupy the building.

The P26-million condominium was built as a socialized housing project of the Garcia administration in 1997, but the building did not serve its purpose, Osmeña had said.

After the Asean, the mayor plans to use the building either as an extension office of the Cebu City Medical Center or a quarantine center. (LCR)
