UV mangles CIT

A UV Green Lancers squad composed mostly of second-string players demolished the CIT Wildcats, 120-94, in the 2006 Cesafi Men's Basketball Tournament at the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.

University of the Visayas head coach Boy Cabahug sent his first five to the bench early, opting to take on what he apparently considers as a weaker Cebu Institute of Technology team with more neophyte players.

"I was confident with their intensity of the stringers that I gave them long minutes in the floor and I think they are getting better and better," Cabahug said after the match.

In the Women's division, two-time defending champion University of Cebu Lady Webmasters yesterday pulled an equally lopsided 84-59 victory against the University of San Jose-Recolletos Lady Jaguars.

The victory opens their grand slam bid with a bang.

Pace

In the men's event, UV's Von Harry Lanete hit two treys in the first few seconds of the first quarter to start a run that closed it at 26-17 and drum a pace that would eventually dictate how the rest of the game would be played.

The Wildcat threesome of Marvin Abapo, Ramel Guevara and Sherwin Abobo, launching a rally of their own in the final seven minutes of the second quarter, trimmed the lead to 45-40 in 3:50 of play but was unable to sustain the effort.

Entertainment

Three UV stringers—Ritchum Marc Dennison Jayford Rodriguez and Rino Berame—launched a rally of their own in the final three minutes of the quarter, entertaining the audience with their acrobatic lay-ups.

Dennison pulled two treys amidst high-flying lay-up to bring UV to a 60-48 lead at half time while Jayford Rodriguez, Rino Berame and Dennison scored 16 points each.

Cabahug subsequently sent the entire second-string line-up who then pulled a 40-point run to close the third period at 102-67.

In the women's event, the Jaguar's starters almost went perfect in the perimeter shots and closed the first canto with 22-15 UC lead.

But UC playmaker Clarissa Lanuza took charge and broke the Lady Jaguars’ defense to grab the 1st half at 35-29.

Double-digit lead

The UC point guard grabbed four steals and as much as eight assists, including fast-break passes, converting it to points that sustained a double-digit lead from the third to the pay-off period.

Allana Lim also towed the line for the Lady Webmasters, pulling rebound in both sides of the court.

The 5-foot-9 center, scored a game-high of 17 points while Lanuza and Maricel Fernandez added 12 points apiece.
