Nice classification By Clint Fabiosa & Andrew Ong I.Protect
The NICE classification is a system of classifying goods and services for the purpose of registering trademarks and service marks.
The system of classification originated from a treaty called the “Nice Agreement,” which was concluded in 1957. Signatories to the agreement need to classify marks that are to be registered in their respective national trademark offices in standard classes.
The system allows for convenient compilation, research and retrieval of registered marks by the national trademark offices. It also simplifies the international registrations of a mark, because other member-countries to which a mark is sought to be registered apply the same classification.
Since the classification is available in different languages, a lot of translation work is saved when applicants need to file registrations in other countries.
Next week, I.Protect answers the question: If I register my mark in one class of the NICE Classification, can somebody else register the same mark in another class?
