Council lauds taxi driver for returning $10T

Half a million pesos could buy a taxi driver his own car or a house and lot.

But Cebuano taxi driver Toribio Malicay Jr., 50, preferred to keep a clear conscience than anything $10,000 can buy.

It was not the first time Malicay’s honesty prevailed.

Malicay’s feat earned the recognition of the Cebu City Council, who passed a resolution commending him for his “exemplary act of honesty.”

Last July 10, Malicay ferried three Japanese tourists to various entertainment establishments in Cebu City using his Spider taxi unit.

He recounted that at dawn the following day, he brought the tourists to their hotel in Lapu-Lapu City but it was only on his way back to Cebu City when he noticed a black wallet on the front seat of his taxi.

Declined reward

After seeing the US$10,000 in cash and the tourist’s passport, he immediately went back to the hotel to return the wallet to his passenger.

Malicay, a resident of Barangay Guadalupe, also reportedly declined from accepting the reward money the tourists offered to give him.

“The exemplary deed of Mr. Malicay is a telling testament that the value of honesty is still not lost among the people driving taxicabs in the city even under these adverse times,” Councilor Edgardo Labella said.

In 1994, Malicay was also commended by the City Government after he turned over to City Hall some P200,000 in cash, which he also found inside his taxi.

Commendation

In the resolution proposed by Labella, Malicay is said to have passed on some credit to Chiquito Obeso, owner of Spider, Airland and Scorpion taxis, who he said encourages all his drivers to return things left by their passengers.

The council approved the resolution “commending Mr. Malicay’s sterling deed of honesty, who, without fanfare, returned the wallet containing $10,000 left behind by one of his three Japanese passengers on the early morning of July 11.”

They also requested the Sannguniang Panlungsod secretary to give copies of the resolution to both Malicay and Obeso. (LCR)
