Rob suspect found dead
A robbery suspect who engaged in a shootout with pursuing policemen the night before was found dead in Barangay Linao, Minglanilla town yesterday morning.
The still unidentified man was pointed to as the one who robbed cab driver Elpidio Bucao in Barangay San Miguel, Talisay City.
According to Chief Insp. Joseph Mangaron, Minglanilla Police Station chief, two robbers hailed Bucao’s taxi somewhere in Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City and asked to be brought to Talisay City.
One of them sat in the front seat while the other occupied the backseat.
When they reached San Miguel at about 11 p.m. Wednesday, the man who sat behind Bucao pulled out a .38 revolver and declared a hold-up.
The two then told him to transfer to the backseat while the gun holder took over the wheel.
They allegedly took P1,100 cash and tried to pry out his stereo.
Motorcycle-for-hire drivers had noticed that the cab was running too slow, as if the driver did not know how to shift to second gear.
They kept looking at the windows but the man on the front seat pointed a gun at them.
When residents noticed the cabdriver trying to escape, a commotion ensued.
The two robbers fled.
Policemen from Talisay City and Minglanilla town pursued them until a shootout occurred.
Mangaron said the shootout ended with the two robbers escaping.
It was only yesterday that they found the body sprawled on the ground.
Mangaron said it was not clear if the man was killed because of a gunshot wound or a stab wound.
The wound was near the neck. There was no exit wound.
Mangaron admitted that the police had fired some shots that night, but said it would be difficult to determine who among the policemen could have hurt the man.
They have requested that an autopsy be performed to find out how the man died.
Mangaron added that when they checked the man’s body for signs of identification, he had none.
When Bucao saw the man, he claimed this was the one who sat in the front seat of his cab.
No cash was found on him, though.
Meanwhile in Balamban town in western Cebu, a man waiting for his girlfriend to get off work was shot while he was sleeping nearby.
Roger Espina Abile, 28, was sleeping inside a karaoke bar at the reclamation area of the Balamban Public Market at 2 a.m. yesterday.
According to PO2 Cesar Climaco, Abile was waiting for his girlfriend Janice Genterona, who worked as an entertainer at the bar.
Witnesses said a lone gunman whose face was concealed by a cloth mask quietly approached Abile and pumped bullets at him before casually walking away.
Responding policemen found four empty shells and four slugs from a 9mm scattered around his body.
Genterona told police that she did not know of anyone who was mad at him.
Climaco also said that Abile had no prior records in their police station.
However, he said they received reports that Abile would pick fights whenever he got drunk. (MEA)
