26 tennis clubs to trade shots today

The stakes are getting higher as 26 clubs from around Cebu have listed to join the MLSDF-organized 1st ML Kwarta Padala Cup Inter-Club Tennis tournament, which will set off at Baseline Tennis Courts at 3 p.m. today.

MLSDF Chairman and Cebu City Sports Commission top executive Michel J. Lhuillier is expected to grace the opening.

The doubles tournament has drawn tennis enthusiasts from as far as Barili and Tuburan. Lawyers, doctors, bankers, engineers, businessmen, politicians, military officers and priests are among the participants.

“This (tournament) is our exploratory event for our planned age-group developmental tennis tournament. Since, MLSDF is all about grassroots development, we will be using whatever knowledge we can acquire from this tournament for the grassroots tournament,” said MLSDF executive director Eddie Ybañez at the Scoop-Cebu forum at Baseline Restaurant yesterday.

Ybañez is accompanied by tournament manager Ritchie Bacalso, a former basketball standout, and now a tennis enthusiast.

The inclusion of IBP Tennis Club among the additional 6 clubs made the tournament more interesting.

Out of these clubs came a total of 130 pairs who will vie for the Class A, B+, B-, C+ and C- titles. Because of the turnout, the tournament playing days are extended until Aug. 6.

“Right now we are now on the drawing board of having a bigger tournament by December. There will be a Visayas and Mindanao Championships with Cebu City as first host,” said Ybañez. (RCM)
