Last 3-on-3 streetball tilt tomorrow
The search for the Cebu representatives to the 2006 Adidas Streetball Challenge is on again tomorrow at the basketball court of the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit.
Among the schools that have confirmed participation are boys division defending champion University of Cebu Webmasters, the University of the Visayas Green Lancers, the University of San Carlos Warriors, the University of San Jose-Recoletos-Jaguars and host Sacred Heart School for Boys-Jesuit.
Defending champions USC Lady Warriors are leading the charge in the girls division.
A competition for cagers 18-years old and below, the champion in the Cebu leg, will no longer compete in the regional level and will automatically earn tickets to the National Finals on August 12-13 in Manila. This is because the legs in Bacolod City and Iloilo City were cancelled.
Other teams
But local organizer Danny Villagracia of the Cebu City Sports Commission said entries from Bacolod City, Iloilo City and other teams from Western Visayas will be accepted to participate here in Cebu.
The deadline for the registration will be today at the Adidas outlet at the Ayala Commercial Complex.
"We are on our 11th year and the last 3-on-3 set up tournament by Adidas," said Jay Salvador, the tournament director, at the Scoop-Cebu Forum yesterday at Baseline Restaurant.
"It would be bigger next year—a 5-on-5 concept worldwide event," added Nilo Cinco, the Events organizer.
Now on its 11th year the Adidas Streetball, the ground where Yap, the 2006 PBA MVP awardee, Villanueva (2005 PBA MVP) and Fonacier (2006 Rookie of the Year awardee) used to dominate, will hold a "smaller," less fancy - but a better quality tournament.
Cebu is the third leg of the tournament after Davao City and Baguio City.
Limited time
With limited time before the Asian Finals that will be held in Guangzhou, China on August 25, the minor age divisions are scrapped and the number of participants is limited to only 36 teams for both the boy's and girls under-18 divisions.
The side events were also trimmed to fast track the event, which will be only good for one day on July 29.
Local organizer headed by Jose "Boy" Murillo said that as of yesterday, there were only five teams who have registered in the event, but local schools had confirmed of their participations.
There is no entrance fee but there will be a stricter and tougher screening to ensure the quality of the game. (With RCM)
