PSC doubles allowance of athletes By Frank C. Calapre Sun.Star Correspondent
The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) yesterday doubled the daily per diems of all athletes, who will be competing abroad.
PSC commissioner Ritchie Garcia said the Filipino athletes will now receive at least $60 dollars a day allowance in any international competition, as part of their preparations for the 15th Asian Games in December in Doha, Qatar.
“(But) they just have to make it sure it’s really a worthy tournament because the board is empowered to approve and disapprove the giving of allowances,” said Garcia.
Regardless of days
The government sports agency will also be giving at least $300 dollars to the members of the Team Philippines who will be seeing action in the 15th Asian Games on Dec. 1 to 15.
“The amount is regardless of how many days the competition will last in the Asian Games,” Garcia said.
Among those who can avail themselves of the revised PSC allowance scheme are members of the bowling, swimming, boxing, triathlon and canoe-kayak teams, which are scheduled to compete abroad.
More athletes
The Philippine Olympic Commiittee on Wednesday approved the participation of 211 athletes to the quadrennial Asiad.
But POC president Jose “Peing” Cojuangco is expecting more to be added, as the general assembly deferred the approval of team sports such as softball, baseball, water polo and men’s basketball until next week.
