KBP bars broadcaster
The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) Cebu Chapter has advised radio anchor Joash Dignos not to go on air, after the body found out that his accreditation with the organization has yet to be renewed.
KBP Cebu Chapter president Edward Abad said yesterday Dignos should refrain from airing his program until he gets a temporary accreditation or his accreditation is renewed.
If Dignos continues to go on air, this will be reported to the KBP Standards Authority in Manila so proper action can be taken. In an interview, Abad said the Cebu chapter can only give recommendations to the head office, for it to impose sanctions on violators of the KBP Broadcast Code.
According to the code, accreditation gives a person access to the airlanes.
Cheryl Ouano, daughter-in-law of Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano, recently filed a libel complaint against Dignos for allegedly saying on his radio program that she had sexual relations with the mayor.
“Ikaw kaning gikaingon nga chief executive nga ni jerjer og umagad,” Dignos said in his July 17 commentary, which the Ouano family taped.
But without an accreditation, Dignos is akin to a driver who has failed to obtain a license, according to the KBP.
The KBP Cebu chapter has also informed the management of radio dyHP to follow the provisions of the KBP Broadcast Code.
Abad said he has talked with dyHP station manager Cynthia Barte about the matter and she assured that appropriate action will be taken.
Abad said he didn’t give any specifics in his letter to dyHP.
“We’re not kids anymore,” he said.
Sought for comment, Cheryl’s legal counsel, Gloria Lastimosa-Dalawampu, said Dignos should not be given accreditation at all.
“His defamatory imputations are bad enough,” she said.
A KBP accreditation not only identifies the broadcaster but also provides him with benefits, such as insurance.
Cheryl Ouano welcomed the development from KBP’s end, but added she is still bent on pursuing the case against the radio commentator so her name will be cleared.
Even if Dignos insists that the term “jerjer” does not connote anything sexual, she said the term is so widely used that even children know what it means.
Citing a sexual harassment case she handled last year, Dalawampu is confident that there is a strong case against Dignos.
The sexual harassment case involved a judge and a female employee, where the term “jerjer” was also used.
In his radio program yesterday, Dignos said the complaints filed against him were the price he has to pay for being vigilant.
“Kung naa ko’y sala, sudlan nako ang prisohan. The truth will set me free,” he said while reiterating that he has never maligned anybody.
The controversy has prompted supporters of Mayor Ouano to send words of encouragement. The mayor’s office faxed to Sun.Star Cebu a copy of a resolution condemning Dignos for his commentaries against the Ouano family. Barangay development coordinators of Mandaue City also signed a letter of support for the mayor.
Meanwhile, Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz (Cebu, 6th district) and former councilor Magno Dionson denied they are backing up Dignos.
Ruiz, in a radio interview, said there is no reason for her to pay somebody to destroy the reputation of other people.
“Maayo na atong relasyon nila (Ouanos). Wa mi’y labot…there are other better issues to tackle,” she said, adding that she personally believes the attacks were really below the belt.
Dionson made the same denial as well.
“Di mimo-apil ana. Ang among tuyo lang ka yang kalimpyo ug kahapsay sa siyudad,” he said in an interview over radio dyRF. (AAG/RCT)
