3-on-3 blasts off By Jade S. Violeta Sun.Star Staff Reporter
A total of 48 teams in two divisions will compete for the final glory as the last edition of the 2006 3-on-3 Adidas Streetball Challenge takes center stage today at the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit gym.
Leading the list of the contenders for the regional title in the boys division are defending champion University of Cebu Webmasters, the University of the Visayas Green Lancers, the University of San Carlos Warriors, the University of San Jose-Recoletos-Jaguars and host Sacred Heart School for Boys-Jesuit.
In the distaff side, defending champion USC Lady Warriors will spearhead the cast alongside the UC Lady Webmasters.
In yesterday's meeting at Baseline Restaurant, adidas Philippines Sports marketing Manager Goody Custodio announced that the farewell edition of the event, which is now on its 11th year, will be following a different format.
The competing teams, under the new format, will no longer have coaches during the actual competition. It will be the responsibility of the team captains to call timeouts or make substitutions.
Tournament director Jay Salvador said the new concept of having no coach is keeping in line with Adidas' thrust of focusing on teamwork.
"Instead of having a coach ay wala tayo n'yan. The reason for this is that we want the players to develop their sense of responsibility and for them to really work as a team," Salvador said in the meeting, that was also attended by newly crowned PBA Philippine Cup champion coach of the Purefoods Chukee Giants, Ryan Gregorio.
Gregorio, for his part, said he is supporting the concept of teamwork since this is also their battlecry in the PBA and is one of the main reason why they won the All-Filipino Conference title recently.
"The most fundamental thing in basketball, be it five on five or three on three is teamwork," said Gregorio, who coach the national finals champion to China.
The champion in the Cebu leg will automatically earn tickets to the National Finals on August 12-13 at the SM Mall of Asia in Manila.
