9 Pinoys barge into Vegas tourney round-of-18
The Philippines asserted its dominance in pool as seven of its bets advanced into the next round of the 2006 IPT North American Open 8-Ball Championship held at The Venetian in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Efren "Bata" Reyes, Francisco "Django" Bustamante, Ronato Alcano, Santos Sambajon, Marlon Manalo, Dennis Orcollo, Alex Pagulayan, Rodolfo Luat and Antonio Lining all secured seats in Round 5 after their respective campaigns in the groupings.
Of the seven, Marlon Manalo displayed the most impressive performance as he tallied four wins against a loss in Group 75.
Manalo defeated the likes of Corey Deuel, Daryl Peach, Alex Lely and Sandor Tot. His lone loss was at the hands of Darren Appleton.
Alcano inked a total of three wins in Group 73, the grouping that includes Thorsten Hohmann and Earl Strickland.
In Group 74, Reyes and Bustamante registered three wins apiece while Sambajon tallied two.
Also inking three wins in Group 76 were Filipinos Orcollo, Pagulayan and Luat while Lining cooped two wins in Group 77.
In Round 4, crowd favorite Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan clinched his advancement into Friday's rounds with an 8-6 win over Dennis Orcollo.
Reyes breezed into Friday's matches with a win against Mike Hill, amidst a huge throng of spectators.
From there, the crowd moved over to Earl Strickland's match against Alcano, which the Filipino barely won.
With that outcome to the match, Alcano, Hohmann, and Hann advance.
