Costanilla: Rypit repeat
By Sam Costanilla
Spotlight

IT is truly commendable on the part of Capitol officials to focus on the festivals being observed by over 30 Cebu towns as one of the highlights of the province’s 437th founding anniversary on August 6. I heard that for their annual cultural competition, all Capitol department heads and employees—who have been grouped into six clusters—will be presenting different municipal festivals. Yes, it’s a competition, as usual, so expect them to be in colorful costumes and authentic hand props. There will be judges, but not from the Capitol. I gathered that the judges are professional choreographers in town.

THE annual cultural competition at the Capitol (every August 6) is one of the most-awaited events involving provincial leaders and employees. It is an event that gives them the chance to act as entertainers or performers. For cash prizes, of course. We hope otherlocal government units follow suit. It’s one way of fostering camaraderie and teamwork among officemates.

TODAY, Monday, is the deadline for local composers to submit their entries to next year’s Cebu Popular Music Festival. They have until 5 p.m. today to go to the University of the Visayas president’s office to pass their compositions for screening on August 12.Festival executive director Philogene Florita says there will be no deadline extension, so he is urging songwriters to hurry up.

THIS writer sincerely congratulates the Repertory of Young Professionals in Theater (Rypit) for marking its 6th year of existence and doing its share in the propagation of the performing arts here. Since its creation by founder-director Jamna Gicole, Rypit hadbeen staging plays and concerts, giving our homegrown talents an opportunity to shine onstage. Jamna should also be commended for sustaining the production of such presentations despite her awareness that doing so is not that financially rewarding. Credit that to her genuine love for the performing arts.

COME August 5, Rypit stars will be doing another play which yours truly is personally endorsing to the public. Bang, Bang, You’re Dead is, according to Jamna, a socially-relevant play as it sets the audience inside the distressed mind of a 17-year-old boy involved in a high school shooting. As to how he deals with the repercussions of his action is something the audience must find out. Yes, the boy is haunted by his conscience and eventually realizes that he will be forced to live the event of that dreadful incident over and over in his mind for the rest of his life. Jamna added that the play sends a powerful warning that parents, school officials and students must take steps to stop verbal, mental and physical abuses.

FOR this particular play, Jamna gathered some of Rypit veterans as well as neopyhtes. They include Warren Joshua Alovera, Isabel Farrarons, Jake Juleous Gacang, Ferdie Solas, Mary Kay Pacaldo, Jane de la Torre, Lotlot Sansan, Dr. Jing Berdon, Kaye Alfafara, Samantha Costanilla and Rei Antoni Escario. Jamna also told me that those schools that are interested in staging the play may call Rypit’s tel. no. 231-1060 orcellphone no. 0918-9218198 for available schedules and requirements. The August 5 show will be at the University of Southern Philippines new building function room, Lahug campus. Performances will be at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. with tickets at P80 only.

THIS regional director of a government agency promised to pay a program host for his services right after the event. It’s been almost a week but the promised fee has not yet been released. The host believes the official pocketed the amount.
