Cordova braces for festivities
IT was first known as Dinagat Festival before it became Bakasi Festival.
This year, the Municipality of Cordova will be celebrating the Dinagat-Bakasi Festival in honor of the town’s heritage as a fishing community and of a type of fish known to locals as an aphrodisiac.
First Lady Cristina Sitoy said in an interview yesterday that the name Dinagat is more of a generic term while Bakasi is specific.
Sitoy said Dinagat means anything that pertains to the sea while Bakasi, a type of fish, is just one of the products.
The Dinagat Festival was first introduced in 1999, when Cordova became the first town in Cebu province to hold its own festival.
Sitoy added that “for a change,” the festival was renamed to Bakasi last year.
Clamor
She said many have clamored for the return of the Dinagat Festival so Dinagat and Bakasi were merged.
This time, the choreography will be even better, although the dances will be performed to the Dinagat beat, Sitoy said.
There will be no drum and bugle corps so native percussion instruments will have to be used.
Sitoy takes pride in the festival, saying the dances are well researched and choreographers are required to attend a workshop first.
The festival will be launched on Aug. 5 at the Cordova Sports Complex.
Nightly activities will be held until the town fiesta on Aug. 15.
Sitoy said the Kadaugan sa Mactan will be among the cultural shows to be held.
Honor
The Kadaugan will be presented in honor of Lapu-Lapu City, which Cordova used to be a part of.
Other activities include beauty pageants and variety shows. There will be no gay beauty contest, though. The street dancing contest on Aug. 13 will highlight the celebration.
Actor Joross Gamboa and actresses Sandara Park and Melissa Ricks are expected to grace the affair.
Street dancing will start in Barangay Gabi and end at the sports complex.
Guest contingents from Mandaue City, Cebu City, Consolacion and Compostela will also present their own dances.
Sitoy said that bringing the dances of other towns and cities to Cordova is her way of expressing support for the Suroy-Suroy sa Sugbo program of Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia. (AAG)
