Iloilo thrashes CebuFA to win U17 Visayas plum

ILOILO City FC swept all of its assignments to defend its title in the Visayas Men’s Under-17 finals, after bashing host team Cebu Football Association in a lopsided 5-0 victory yesterday at the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit field.

Iloilo scored six points after winning their two games over Cebu and Negros Occidental Football Association, to bag the title for the second straight time and earn the right to represent the region in the national Under-17 final.

Cebu, which slumped without a single victory, settled for third place behind Nofa.

Cebu’s loss had served as a wake up call to the local football community, that there is a great need to improve the quality of playing here in Cebu.

“This is a very good learning experience for our players and to us coaches that at this level, the quality of football being played in other provinces is very high,” Ceniza said.

He promised, however, that while there will definitely be a next year, they will be back with a better performance.

Iloilo head coach Leo Betita said after the game that he was concerned of the Cebuano booters’ size, but obviously managed to look for a solution as his team clobbered the Cebuanos in their own turf.

“We were outmatched. We lost to a superior team. Superior in the sense that they are prepared mentally and physically” said CebuFA head coach Mario Ceniza said.

Joven Bedic slipped into the hero’s shoes as he scored a hat trick that had lead to his team’s victory. Jomar Lestingio scored the other two goals.

Bedic first struck in the 36th minute in the first half, before pulling out a Beckham three minutes later with a long kick from the half border of the field to pad his team’s lead to 2-0 going into the final period.

Lestigio, on the other hand, opened Iloilo’s scoring binge in the second half. Cebu goalie Paolo Pacual thwarted a potential goal from another Iloilo striker, but it went to Lestigio, who slipped the ball past Pascual, for a 3-0 lead.

Bedic completed his hat trick in the 74th minute for Iloilo to build up an insurmountable lead. Lestigio sealed Iloilo’s fate with another goal in the 78th juncture. (MCB)
