Manalo faces Hohmann in IPT final
MARLON "Marvelous" Manalo carried on the fight of the Filipino cue artists, after the Mandaluyong City-native barged into the final round of the International Pool Tour 2006 North American 8-Ball Championships.
Manalo stringed a total of four wins with 61.04 winning percentage in Group 82 to arrange a championship showdown versus Germany's Thorsten Hohmann in the $3-million rich event at the the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Casualties
Manalo and Hohmann, who also tallied four victories in Round 6 with a 57.27 winning percentage, left in their wake casualties that included Pinoy billiard legend Efren "Bata" Reyes, Dennis Orcollo, Ralf Souquet and Evgeny Stalev.
Reyes, who inked a couple of wins in Round 6, took home $65,000 for placing fourth while Orcollo won $80,000 for third place.
Stalev took $40,000 for sixth place and Souquet earned $50,000 for fifth. The remaining $449,000 will be awarded to Manalo and Hohmann after the match, which was scheduled yesterday.
According to articles in the internationalpooltour.com website, Manalo, who was born on Nov. 27, 1975, "has become a lethal weapon in the world of pool" and is "one of the most feared players today."
Smooth cue artist
In 2001, Manalo won the Asian Snooker Championship, earning him the tag as a predominantly snooker player.
He was also “very smooth” and “remained cool as a cucumber” when he beat Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamente rack after rack at the 2004 WPC. According to his profile, due to the fellowship of their Filipino heritage, it was bittersweet for Marlon to beat his opponent Reyes.
In the IPT, Manalo played a total of 28 matches, winning 23 and losing five, for a winning percentage of 82.14.
For his part, Hohmann—who played 28 games, winning 21 while losing seven for a winning percentage of 75—is described as having "trained in Europe to be the best competitor he could be, regardless of fame or fortune."
Due to his consistency in the sport of pool, Thorsten is ranked number three by the UPA and number one in the world. (JSV)
