Queen City Utd. snares Aboitiz Women’s Open

QUEEN City United formally bagged the Aboitiz Women's Open after defeating and undermanned Mulbachs, 3-1, yesterday at the San Roque Parish football grounds.

Meanwhile, the young San Roque FC also completed its surprise run this year, after bagging the second spot with a 2-0 win over the University of San Carlos in the first match.

Jacuklyn Elmar scored the first goal in the 68th minute before a collapse in the USC defense allowed Ren Mijaran to score in the 90th.

San Roque, coached by Eleazer Toledo, had a slim chance of bagging the women's title had Mulbachs, which finished the season winless in three games, beat Queen City by seven goals.

However, that slim hope was dashed even before the start of the game, after only seven Mulbachs players showed up for the kickoff.

Despite playing with only seven players, Mulbachs gamely put up a good fight in the first half as their defense kept Queen City on check.

Marlou Solon and the rest of the Queen City strikers had chances to attack almost at will, but only Solon managed to score in the 16th minute for a 1-0 lead at the half.

Katrina Bejec added another in the 77th minute, before Riza Demitillo put Mulbachs back in the game with her strike in the 79th.

Cristina Fuentes scored the final goal for Queen City in the 85th to seal their win.

With another title in the bag, Queen City will return to the Philippine Football Federation National Women's Open set in Dumaguete City next week, hoping to do one better than their runner-up finish to Davao City last year.

"We will be picking up players from San Roque and from San Carlos for Dumaguete," said Queen City coach Dexter Arrojado.

Aside from the two teams, Arrojado said he will also try to reinforce his team with players from Cebu International School, though the team will first discuss who to pick.
