UC suffers heartbreaking loss By Jaime Frias II Sun.Star Correspondent
ALLAIN Abellanosa of the University of Cebu Webmasters can only shed tears after wasting three ball possessions in the dying seconds of their Cesafi basketball match against the University of Visayas (UV) Green Lancers last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Green Lancers won, 74-72.
UV’s victory was cemented with two quick successive attacks from Morsie Akad's high-flying lay-up and Cris Victor Diputado's two charity points in the last minute of the game.
Abellanosa blew what could be the best chances for the Webmasters to pull an upset when he lost the three ball possessions.
Traveling
He was called for a traveling violation on his way to the net at 30.4. He compensated with a quick steal off an inbound pass from UV’s Cris Victor Diputado, and drove for a basket with 23 seconds left. The shot licked the ring.
Abellanosa, who was exploding three-point bombs and tallied 34 points last Saturday against the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, then missed a game-winning shot at the arc with 6 seconds left.
He scored 16 points in the game and was 1-of-5 from the three-point area.
Watching Abellanosa’s despair was Dondon Hontiveros, who was watching the two big Cesafi contenders yesterday. No stranger to hardcourt heartbreaks, Hontiveros himself shed tears during their semifinal loss to South Korea in the 2002 Asian Games.
Jaymar Berame, who led UV’s offense in the first and third cantos, has 18 points while Akad added 15.
On top
UV is toting a clean 3-0 win-loss slate to stay on top of the men's division. USJ-R is second with a 2-0 card.
In another breathtaking match last Saturday, the University of Southern Philippines (USP) nipped the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 85-82.
In the women's division, the University of San Carlos Lady Warriors beat the USJ-R lady Jaguars, 72-64.
The Lady Warriors started slow in their offense and even got outclassed in the second quarter but managed a clear way to victory in the third and fourth quarter, when they shifted to transitions.
The Joannah Malinao-led Lady Jaguars took the second quarter, 30-27, but the Lady Warriors' Jessamine de los Reyes and Fairlette Ceniza led the offense in the last two cantos and maintained a double-digit lead until the last tick of the game.
Some problems
"Actually we had some problems in the first two quarters. The girls did not have some warm up because they were late," said Lady Warriors coach Mike Reyes.
In the first game of the high school division, USP routed defending champion UV Baby Lancers, 87-75.
In the second game, the USC Baby Warriors beat the Cebu Institute of Technology Wildkittens, 90-81.
