Limpag: Stylish phone from Motorola By Max Limpag Celltalk
CHRISTMAS WISHLIST. Here’s something to drool over for Christmas this year: the Motofone (see photo).
Motorola’s new handset is super slim and sleek, it makes your Nokias and Sony Ericssons look like clunky devices.
The Motophone, which was unveiled last week, is the thinnest Motorola phone yet at 9mm (approach your friendly neighborhood cop and take a look at his or her 9mm, .38 bullet--the circumference of the bullet head is 9mm--to get an idea of the width of the phone). The phone will be available at the end of this year.
Motorola’s press office says the handset is “poised to redefine the market by making high design and smart technology truly affordable.” Now, what is affordable in first world countries is usually out of reach to third world citizens, but the Motophone seems to be an entry-level model. Motorola’s press release says that with the phone, they hope to “empower these new users to embrace mobile communication with confidence and style.”
I also checked its features listing and I can’t see entries for an integrated camera or a music player, so it does seem to be an entry-level unit.
The Motofone uses a new interface that relies more on icons and voice instead of text. This, the company said, “makes it simpler and friendlier for first-time users to navigate, place a call, and retrieve messages.”
It also uses a large, high contrast screen with their ClearVision display, which helps eliminate glare from direct sunlight. The display, according to the company, can be viewed clearly even under direct sunlight. The phone also uses large fonts to improve readability.
IT’S LOUD. The phone comes with “polyphonic ringtones, speakerphone and long-lasting battery life.” It also uses “a very powerful, loud volume” to make sure that “callers can hear phone conversations and will not miss calls even in a busy marketplace or crowded street.” The way the press statement is phrased does seem to suggest that this phone is marketed for your typical crowded third world country.
Pre-paid customers using the phone will automatically get a report on their account balance after each call or message.
For pre-paid customers, the Motofone automatically reports the status of their pre-paid account after each call or message, if their telcos support it.
For an entry-level phone, the Motofone sure looks better than many high-end units.
