Gold-Laden Dance Tour By Marian C. Baring Sun.Star Correspondent
The Cebuano dance athletes sealed their performance in the 38th International Grand Ball Championships with nine more gold medals, bringing their total haul to 20 first place finishes at the close of the three-day tournament yesterday at the Marriot Hotel in San Francisco.
The team came up with a 9-1-1 gold-silver-bronze finish yesterday to bring the overall haul to 20 golds, three silvers and two bronze medals.
Leading the gold is the tandem of Jojie and Jonah del Rosario, who dominated in three events yesterday for a total of six gold medals. The partners topped in Amateur 4 Dance, Amateur Standard 3 Dance, Open Gold Adult 1 Waltz, Open Gold Adult 1 Tango, Foxtrot and Chachacha.
Gold medals also rained on DTCC head coach Loloi Rendon and partner Dancesport Team Cebu City directress Eleanor Hayco, who earned three yesterday. They now have five gold medals tucked under their belts, after winning the Senior Latin 5 Dance, Open Gold A2 Tango, Foxtrot, Chachacha and Rumba.
More golds
Ricca Gatal Alix and Renante Saldua had a total of three golds, all won on the second day in Open Silver waltz, foxtrot and quickstep, while Lowell Bernados and Jeanen Bergado had one gold won in the Open Gold Latin Chachacha.
Jimmy Noel and her 19-year-old partner Karla Fornolles capped their first US appearance with a gold medal in the Amateur Latin Adult 3 division yesterday, bringing their total gold medals to three, after winning in the Amateur Latin 4 and Open Gold Rumba.
The team also won in the team formation in the first day of competition.
Road show
Up next for the Cebuano dance athletes is the Empire State Dancesport Championship in Manhattan on Aug. 10 to 14, before the road show shifts to the Nevada Star Ball Dancesport Championship, slated on Aug. 17 to 20.
Before the Manhattan stint, the group will grace the Dance Village Show on Aug. 4, followed by another show in Las Vegas on Aug. 5, before flying to New York for their second tournament.
They will rest before returning to Las Vegas to join the final competition.
