Unity Cup eyes more teams By Marian C. Baring Sun.Star Correspondent
For this year’s staging of the second edition of the Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup for Women, the governor feels much more “relaxed compared to last year.”
“Sauna, napuno kog kulba, pero karon, gaan akong pamati kay nagkuyog kitang tanan (Before, I was full of nerves but now, I feel better because were are united),” Garcia said addressing the municipal mayors in yesterday’s launching at the Capitol Social Hall.
The Unity Cup was organized last year at the height of the Sugbuak issue. Despite the politics, the tournament drew 42 teams.
This year, Garcia is confident the event, which is organized by the Cebu Volleyball Association (Ceva), will attract more component cities and municipalities.
Dismemberment
“It was our expression of our hopes that in spite of threats of possible dismemberment, we would rise above the ugliness of traditional politics,” she said.
This year, the organizing team headed by Ceva president Glen Soco is targeting 52 towns to join.
Aside from volleyball, Soco said they will exploit the chance of going around the different places in Cebu to promote and hold more activities other than volleyball.
“We are expanding the concept and will be tackling the tourism part of it, with our partner television channel making a feature on tourism and heritage of the places where the games are being held,” Soco said.
The venues will not be that of last year’s, however, to give chance to other places to be exposed.
Equipment
“We will give a chance to the other places. Because we will also be donating sports equipment to these cities and municipalities,” Nona Catipay of the secretariat said.
Meanwhile, the opening, slated on the third week of September at the Mandaue City Sports Complex, will be announced on Aug. 19 in time for the day-long general assembly of all teams.
The format will still be that of last year’s, where teams will be divided into clusters.
If the number of teams increases, Catipay said that they will add two more clusters to last year’s eight.
Cluster winners will still be receiving P20,000, while runners-up take home P10,000. The overall winner will pocket the P100,000 top purse, while the runner-up gets P50,000. There will also be special prizes for the Best Libero, Spiker, Server, Blocker, Tosser and Most Valuable Player.
“We will be giving out more incentives to the winners this year, aside from the cash prizes and the watches that we gave out last year,” Catipay added.
