MLKP tennis tilt heats up

Pardo Tennis Club players are on a roll as Eldon and Eliezer Yac moved into the semifinal round of the 1st ML Kwarta Padala Cup Inter-Club Tennis Tournament.

The Pardo TC duo carved an 8-3 win over Boy Singson and J. Jaromillo of Lapu-Lapu TC in the B- category of the MLSDF-organized tournament at Baseline Recreation Center Tennis Courts last Monday night.

The Yacs were joined by Pardo TC teammates Elmer Yac and Richard Zabate and Harry Abellanosa and Joseph Ababon, who also breezed into the next round after eliminating their opponents.

Yac and Zabate beat Col. Julio Agosto and Bong Carolino of the Southern Islands Medical Center (SIMC) TC 8-4, while Abellanosa and Ababon needed to be extra careful in the last two sets to subdue Alex and G. Gestopa of Mantads TC with an 8-6 win.

At Court 1 for the Class A division quar-terfinal match, Popoy Lumpayao and Lito Tenepre of Mantads TC advanced into the semifinal round after dealing with Joel Cortez and Czar Melencion of Cebu Commercial TC, 8-6.

String of errors

Lumpayao and Tenepre were heading to an easy win leading 5-0 as Cortez and Melencion succumbed to a string of errors early.

However, the CCTC netters slowly got back into action and before the Mandaue players knew it, they were already within 4-5.

The score went 6-4 before it settled at 7-6 and from there, Lumpayao and Tenepre made sure there won’t be any tie-breaker game, as they forced Cortez and Melencion to yield the final set to win the game.

In the other Class A quarterfinal matches, Wendell Orcullo and Vince Acasio of SIMC TC made it to the semifinal round after beating the Ryan and Mac-Mac tandem of La Paloma TC, 8-5, while Bryan and Jerry Abad eliminated Jun Jun Cabrera and Gabino Seno of Mantads TC, 8-2.

Next round

SIMC TC also saw Ronnie Pacifico and Buddy Badaug moving into the next round after beating a duo of Dumanjug TC.

La Paloma TC also had two more pairs into the next round following Titing Sayson and Antonio Beltran’s win over Ogis Uy and Eddie Lanaria of SIMC, 8-4.

Mike Bacalso and Erwin Yac eliminated Oberes and Fortich of Linao TC, 8-6, in the Class B+ action.

Meanwhile, Provincial Board member Raul Bacaltos and his partner Jun Luminarias of Talisay TC survived a hardly fought game, pulling an 8-7 (7-3) tie-breaker win over Romy Pinote and Ahong Chan of Lapu-Lapu City in the Class C+ elimination match. (RCM)
