Businesses launch program to back Mandaue’s projects
Mandaue's business sector has expressed support to the local government’s bid to make the area the “emerging convention city” in the province.
During a press conference yesterday at the San Miguel Corp.’s 1521 conference hall, Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (MCCI) president Eric Mendoza said the MCCI has come up with programs to help the City expedite the realization of the local government’s plan to become a convention hub.
Yesterday, MCCI donated P320,000 to the Mandaue City Government. The money is meant to help in the beautification and landscaping of the Cebu International Convention Center’s (CICC’s) premises.
The construction of the CICC has prompted Man-daue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano to issue Executive Order 17, in which the mayor acknowledges the need to enhance the city’s image as the preferred destination and promote the same image through the conduct of local and international meetings and conferences, investment fora, conventions and exhibitions.
Mendoza said implementation of the programs to help the City face the challenge will start this month, during the Mandaue Business Month 2006, an annual event in line with Mandaue’s 37th Charter Day celebration.
“As Mandaue City positions itself to meet the demands of global competition, the MCCI endeavors to prepare the business players in both extreme ends of the entrepreneurial development to find their niche and prepare for the continuing progress accelerated by the expected Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) attention,” he said.
He said the theme for this year’s business month celebration is “Building Entrepreneurs by Strengthening the Base.”
Activities—such as, local and international jobs fair, business opportunity fair, business forum and the small and medium enterprise seminar—are all in support of the technical needs of the “base” or the micro and small companies in Mandaue.
MCCI second vice president for external affairs Emma Ramas said a mass transport system project for Mandaue City, which will be funded by the Asian Development Bank, will be discussed in one of the fora.
“(Those who will implement the program) chose to pilot it in Mandaue City among other cities in the country,” she said. (JBN)
