Water technology provider closes deal with MEZ 2

Water technology solutions provider Mactan Rock Industries Inc. (Mactan Rock) is offering to help companies in Cebu cut down water consumption and reduce overall operations costs.

Mactan Rock executive vice president Lito Maderazo said the firm provides equipment and services to treat wastewater and re-use it.

The system not only helps companies cut down cost, it also lowers demand for potable water, he said.

He added that the company finalized last Monday a deal with the Aboitiz-owned and managed Mactan Economic Zone (MEZ) 2 to treat the water at a pond within the MEZ 2 compound.

“We had a trial operation for more than a year to observe the sustainability of the project. We have found it sustainable,” Maderazo said.

“Before we put up the treatment plant, the pond used to overflow to the neighboring community when it rains. Now, it hasn’t,” he added.

Mactan Rock invested some P20 million for the water treatment facility at MEZ 2. It also invested P30 million for another water treatment facility to serve MEZ 1.

Approved

Last month, the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza) approved Mactan Rock’s application to sell treated water to locators at MEZ 1.

Maderazo said the company is now selling non-potable water to 12 companies such as, Exas Philippines, Pentax Cebu Philippines Corp. and Fairchild at MEZ 1.

He said Mactan Rock has decided to sell treated water to locators at MEZ 1 because its treatment plant, which serves Waterfront Mactan Airport Hotel, and water from wells in the area, have excess capacity.

Mactan Rock is also selling treated used water at half the price of potable water to the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

“Buying treated water for other purposes will allow the company to save on water cost. Why should they use potable water for watering the plants, or to clean their comfort rooms when they can use treated used water for these purposes,” Maderazo said.

He said Mactan Rock has been treating used water of companies in Cebu and in other areas in the country, such as the Country Club and Westin Plaza Hotel.

“We are willing to spend from our own pocket for the water treatment facility, as long as the companies will buy back the treated water,” Maderazo said.

With regard to Mactan Rock’s issue with the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD), Maderazo said the company will let the public and the court be the judge.

He alleged that Mactan Rock had been unable to deliver the specified volume of water to MCWD because the latter’s distribution system was not able to accommodate the supply. (JBN)
