Capitol honors 60 Cebuana trailblazers

The Cebu Provincial Government paid tribute to distinguished women in Cebu’s history, including those from the pre-Spanish colonial period, as part of its 437th founding anniversary celebration.

The “Cebuana Trailblazers Heritage Cards” were launched Wednesday night after a screening by a committee headed by Dr. Erlinda Alburo, director of the Cebuano Studies Center.

The heritage cards bear the photographs and biography of 60 women from the early revolutionary movement, culture and arts, business, the academe and other sectors.

“Now, as in the beginning, Cebu is at the very navel of processes transforming the nation...and the Cebuano woman is not only a binding influence in the home, but also a visible and influential presence in community life,” the Provincial Women’s Commission quoted Dr. Resil Mojares in the book “Cebu, More than an Island.”

The list of women include lawyer Arbet Sta. Ana-Yongco as “champion of alternative lawyering,” Dr. Felisa Etemadi as an “Outstanding Teacher Researcher,” international artist Ingrid Sala Santamaria, and Provincial Board Member Agnes Magpale for braving the world of politics to legislate for women and children’s rights.

From the arts include Gloria Sevilla as “Queen of the Visayan Movies,” “Durable Actress” Caridad Sanchez, Luz Mancao-Sandiego for being a “pioneer researcher and cultural conservator of Cebuano Folk dance” and Pilita Corrales, Asia’s “Queen of Songs.”

Women behind Cebu’s delicacies were also given recognition, such as Juliana Perez-Suico as the original maker of masareal, Honoria Paras for promoting the “otap” and Margarita Frasco for Titay’s rosquillos.

Entrepreneur Julia Ramon-Gandionco is also recognized for the success story of Julie’s Bakeshop, Thelma Chiong for her crusade against violence and Estelita Diola as “keeper of the Sinulog Beat.”

“Legendary” pre-Spanish warrior Hingyuon was included, and Ombudsman-Visayas Director Virginia Santiago for her “pursuit of efficiency and transparency.”

Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia is also among the 60 for being the first woman governor of Cebu. (JPM)
