Fire hits storeroom of medical school

Fire hits storeroom of medical school

Classes were disrupted when a fire hit a storeroom of the Cebu Institute of Medicine (CIM) along F. Ramos St., Cebu City yesterday afternoon.

No student was reported hurt but two firefighters suffered minor cuts on their hands while destroying the glass windowpanes of the storeroom.

Fire marshal Ysmael Codilla identified the firefighters as SFO1 Roger Dabalos and FO1 Romeo Birao.

SFO1 Frank Donozo, who investigated the incident, said the stockroom was at the third floor-physiology/pharmacology wing of the five-story CIM building.

Based on the information gathered by Donozo from the school’s management, old records and files of previous students were kept in the storeroom.

CIM was built in 1961. Donozo said yesterday’s fire was the first to hit the building.

The Bureau of Fire Protection in Cebu City tapped the alarm at 1:45 p.m. The incident was only placed under first alarm status.

The firemen managed to contain the blaze in 15 minutes and prevented it from spreading to the adjacent classrooms.

Donozo said the water damaged four classrooms, though.

Damages were pegged at P150,000.

An electrical short-circuit is being looked into by the investigator as the cause of the fire.

Codilla said the stockroom should have been placed away from the classrooms or the crowded area.

“If we base it on the Fire Code, it should have been separated,” Codilla said.

He said he will recommend to the school’s administration to put up a stockroom away from the classrooms.

City Councilor Gabriel Leyson, whose mother is a Velez, is one of the owners of the school.

He said he normally does not interfere as to how the school is run, but said, “I will suggest to my relatives,” the recommendation of the fire department.

Leyson’s eldest sister, Dr. Josefina Poblete, is the school dean.

He said the damage was minimal, as the fire only destroyed old records.

“What is needed is only to reconstitute the records and to repaint the building,” he added.

Classes resumed after the fire as only the storeroom and a few rooms were affected. (JST/RHM)
