Nude photos deleted but City logo stays

Photos of half-naked women were already removed from a website bearing the Cebu City Government’s official seal, but the mayor still wants to find out who was behind the posting.

While he agreed that there is a need to look into the matter, Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he will not make it a priority at this time.

Osmeña said the City Government will try to find out who is behind the misuse of the City’s seal on a website that featured photos of half-naked women.

“We’ll let our intelligence people work on that. Of course what happened is not acceptable, although I don’t think the people actually believe the City Government is behind it,” he told a news conference yesterday.

City Planning Officer Nigel Paul Villarete earlier asked the City Attorney’s Office to look into the issue, which was heavily criticized in the City Government’s official website.

When he checked the pornographic site yesterday, though, the lewd photos were no longer posted, but the City’s seal remained.

“It’s a misrepresentation and unauthorized use of our official seal but it’s not earth shattering to me…. We have to do something about it but I won’t give it the highest priority. There are many ways of responding to it, including finding out who’s behind it,” Osmeña said.

The mayor further said what worries him more is the possibility that children will be exploited in the Internet.

In the Cebu City’s forum website, at least three individuals pointed to an American national as the one who is behind the pornographic website.

The American was reportedly deported last Jan. 17 after immigration officers found out he did not have a passport and a visa.

His estranged Filipina wife also joined the discussion in the website and said the website operator also engaged in an Internet café business, which he allegedly used for his mail-order bride activities. (LCR)
