Tomas allows vendors 1 more week to leave
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña gave sidewalk vendors another week to comply with the requirements of Citom, but he warned demolition of the stalls of erring vendors will start soon after the deadline.
Osmeña also said yesterday he will not provide a relocation site for vendors whose stalls will be demolished.
In a news conference, the mayor said the vendors will just have to comply with the recommendations of the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom), which already identified the sidewalks where vending is prohibited.
‘Police power’
“I’ll give it a week. It’s not like I’m eager to do it but I’m not going to sit on this for a longer time. If I feel they’re not going to move, then we will have to exercise police power and open the sidewalks,” he said.
If the vendors continue to block pedestrian lanes and sidewalks, Osmeña said he will order the demolition next week.
City Hall will not provide any relocation site since vendors are likely to continue staying in the main thoroughfares, he said.
“In those areas where they say the vendors can stay, then it’s okay, they can stay. But those areas where they say vendors are unacceptable, then the vendors will just have to comply,” the mayor added.
14 streets
Citom Executive Officer Arnel Tancinco has identified 14 streets and areas where vendors encroach on.
These are the streets of Colon, B. Rodriguez, Magallanes, P. Lopez, P. del Rosario, Legazpi, Pelaez, Panganiban, and Leon Kilat, the Fuente Osmeña rotunda, junction of Salinas Drive and Gorordo Ave., Jose Solon Drive from Escario St. to Archbishop Reyes Ave., N. Bacalso Ave., and Osmeña Blvd. (LCR)
