Wenceslao: Contrary voices
By Bong O. Wenceslao

It’s good that Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña and other well-meaning people like Msgr. Achilles Dakay and former governor Vicente “Tingting” de la Serna are calling for caution in the implementation by the Provincial Government of the “all-out war” policy against insurgents.

Democracy needs contrary voices to be effective.

I think the thread binding the views of those opposed to the all-out war plan is our sad experience with Ferdinand Marcos’ martial rule, when anti-communist hysteria and fanaticism were encouraged. That resulted in widespread violation of people’s rights unprecedented in the history of this country. After that, didn’t we cry: “never again”?

Radio dyHP anchor Joash Dignos is back on air after being forced to take a leave of absence and renew his accreditation with the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP). He has also reportedly gotten the support of the dyHP management in the libel case filed against him by Cheryl Ouano---which, of course, is expected.

Now, all eyes will be on the Mandaue city prosecutors’ office and eventually the court on how it will act on Ouano’s complaint. I heard that Dignos boasted that all the previous libel charges filed against him have been dismissed. So this man is like some media personalities I know who wear libel suits like it is a badge of honor. Pastilan.

I was more amused than surprised by the way Allan “Goliat” Nacorda and Julian “Teban” Daan toyed with people’s sensibilities by claiming “ger-ger” means everything else but sexual intercourse. Teban and Goliat are with dyHP like Dignos, who used the word ger-ger in hitting Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano and daughter-in-law Cheryl.

I agree that ger-ger is not bastos; if it were, Teban and Goliat wouldn’t have been able to use it on air. It is more of euphemism, a word used in lieu of a vulgar term. It’s like saying “Kayasa uy!” Kayasa is pleasing to the ears but we all know what the word refers to. Thus, listening to Teban and Goliat reminded me of another word: nilikoy.

E-MAIL. “Esoy Pinoy sa America,” agreed to my point that nobody is more qualified and deserving among the present BO-PK leaders than Mike Rama. “He is well educated and adequately trained and close to the masses,” he said.

“But unless Mike will learn to act like a real leader and behave independently, having a ‘Mayor Mike Rama’ would be more of a myth. Mike is too sigurista; too selfish to sacrifice for the masses who need a better man at the City Hall.”
