Talk back: Abuse of press freedom
By Hector L. Fernandez

The column entitled “Who’s afraid of Joash Dignos” (Sun.Star Cebu, Aug. 1, 2006) hit the proverbial nail right on the head.

There are very few irresponsible newspaper columnists and radio commentators, but the fall-out of their pernicious activities adversely affects media as a whole.

Half-baked radio commentators and newspaper columnists, whose ideas are barren, have to rip off a reputation or come up with incendiary innuendos or conjectures to attract radio listeners or newspaper readers.

Editors of news dailies and managers of radio stations should rein in the abusive ways of the people under them. They should not abet but abate commentaries, in radio or in print, that tend to go overboard.

One way of nipping in the bud such nefarious activities is to publish complaints of readers or listeners.

A third-rate newspaper in Cebu City refused to publish the gripes of a newspaper reader against its columnist, who writes in the local dialect, mixed with English and very few Spanish words, like the Chinese chopsuey.

It is consolation enough that there is still a newspaper in Cebu City that has come out with candid perceptions on abuse of press freedom.
