Pinoys aim for 3 in a row
By MIke Limpag
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

After a grueling campaign in the North American 8-Ball Championships Pinoy pool legends Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante join three other Filipinos in a more relaxed opening round of the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour Kaohsiung Leg.

Each of the 24 players in the eight groups will play just two games today with the top player in each group advancing to the knockout stage.

Hours

In contrast, during the 8-Ball championships, where three Pinoys made it to the last six, participants played at least five games per round, with some playing on the table for hours.

Filipinos ruled the first two legs of this year’s Asian 9-ball tour.

Vietnam leg champion Reyes, the most successful campaigner in the San Miguel tour, is in Group 3 with Nien Rong Chih and Masaaki Tanaka, while Bustamante is in Group 2 with Amnuayporn Chotipong and Vu Trong Khai.

On the other hand, Ramil Gallego, the Bangkok leg champion, is in Group 1 with current World Pool Champion Wu Chia-Ching and Chang Keng-Kwang.

Rodolfo Luat, who also competed in the 8-Ball Championships, is in Group 6 with Ricky Yang and Wang Hung Hsiang. Gandy Valle will face Yang Ching Shun and Ibrahim Bin Amir in Group 6.

Alternate breaks

Unlike the just concluded 8-Ball championships, Pinoy pool fans can catch the action live with Gallego, Reyes, Valle and Bustamante’s first round matches all set at the TV table.

In the first round and second round, the players will play a race to nine match with alternate breaks, while the semifinals and finals will be a race to 11 contest with winner's break.

The champion in the tour will earn $10,000 and valuable qualifying points for the World Pool Championships later this year in Manila.
