Gaisano cool despite new Rustan’s store

Metro Gaisano is not threatened by the establishment of a Rustan’s Supermarket at the Ayala Center Cebu (ACC).

In an interview, Vicsal Development Corp. (VDC) president Jack Gaisano said the company would rather have “friendly” competition with a Filipino-owned company than foreign ones.

“It’s okay. As long as it is a Filipino company. The presence of Rustan’s would complement our operation. It would bring more traffic to Ayala,” he said.

VDC is the developer-operator of Metro Gaisano, the anchor store of Ayala Center Cebu.

Rustan’s Supermarket will occupy the entire ground floor of the mega-complex, Ayala Center Cebu’s expansion building, which is under construction.

In an earlier interview, Cebu Holdings Inc. president Rene Almendras said Metro Gaisano and Rustan’s would not compete with each other as they have different target markets.

Rustan’s used to occupy Mango Square mall on Gen. Maxilom Avenue in Cebu City.

Meanwhile, Gaisano said VDC plans to open two to three more Metro Gaisano branches in Luzon within the year.

Metro Gaisano has three existing branches in Manila. These are located in Lucena City, Legaspi City and in Taguig, inside Ayala’s Market! Market! (JBN)
